Boating
We have marinas, launches and docks galore in the Straits of Mackinac! Whatever your boating pleasure, you'll find supplies and hospitality along the shore.
Canoe - Kayak

The paddling sport is for serenity lovers, for the more athletic, for the adventuring type! St. Ignace has miles of shoreline close by with smooth waters, island channels, inlets, rivers and creeks. The bird sanctuary just west of the Mackinac Bridge is a spectacular place to glide along with open vista of sky, water and wild things. Inland lakes at Brevort and the Les Cheneaux Islands offer the best in kayak and canoe adventures.
Fishing

Fishing in the area is nothing short of spectacular! The Mackinac Straits offer extraordinary opportunities for migratuory salmon and steelhead as well as small mouth bass, pike, muskie, and other species. Our locatioin is an obvious advantage for fishing Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, but don't miss out on th einland lakes and rivers, which are abundant in our area.
The spring fishing season begins in April. The smelt begin to run and dippers arrive with nets and lights. Trout season begins in late April and walleye season begins May 15.
Summer is the season for charter fishing as brown trout, lake trout, salmon and steelhead are prevalent. July and August are king salmon months, where the action is fast and furious. Fly fishing is also excellent in the summer and all the way through fall. Anglers seeking a quiet getaway can find solitude on one of the many brook trout streams flowing trought our area.

Diving
The 148 square miles of the Straits of Mackinac Underwater Preserve is located at the northern tip of two of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Straits have always had a reputation as a dangerous area for ships. Storms originating in the lower Lakes can funnel through the Straits, magnifying wind and waves. Over the years a number of ships foundered, or were driven ashore. Many shipwrecks carpet the bottom of the Straits. You can explore more details at the listings below.
Swimming
Summertime brings limitless swimming opportunites as the local waters warm up. St. Ignace has a sand beach at Kiwanis Park right downtown! For those who need a little more space and sprawl, a quick drive down US-2 will bring you to one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. The ancient dunes of Lake Michigan drop down to the water and the soft sand bottom stretches out shallow for a good distance. You and your family will enjoy the waves and water, sunshine and fresh air in the cleanest, clearest lakes in the world. Inland lakes and ponds offer more swimming at parks and scenic areas.
